The Liberation Collection – images (III)

This is the third in a series of posts that will focus on individual books in the Liberation Collection, and their illustrations. The first post is here, the second here.

While a number of illustrated works (including those featured previously) have been of relatively simple pen and ink drawings, this book provides a more comic twist on the theme. A humorous look at the deprivations of life in France during the war years, each scene of daily life is illustrated by a simple drawing.

We’ve written previously about Paul Éluard’s books in the collection– we even have 5 editions of this work in the UL. This edition is not especially visually spectacular (though it’s in very good condition, and is a very special book) because it only has one image in it. However… when that image is a portrait of the author by Pablo Picasso, it’s worth highlighting. For the sake of comparison, two further images of the author are available here.

The Liberation Collection, obviously, contains a large number of books about the actual liberation of Paris (the battle for the city at the end of August 1944). Some are illustrated in order to help convey a strategic understanding of where the battles were taking place; some in order to illustrate what physically happened during the battles; and some depict the people who were active in the Resistance, and what activities they were involved with.

The illustrations in this book provide a great sense of activity, movement and urgency as the battle progresses.

And finally, a number of the books in this collection aren’t lavishly illustrated, save for the cover (or dust jacket). These are often classics of the genre of WWII war art, as illustrated in the following two examples:
